Officials in Tabriz have announced they arrested 330 people after anti-regime demonstrations which left four dead. Sparked by denigrating cartoons which ridiculed the Turkic Azaris, often the butt of jokes similar to Polack ones in the USA.

Typical of indiscriminate arrests, the local authorities stated 88 (only) of the arrestees had a definite role in the demonstrations. A large number of the rest were listed as Bahais (currently persecuted throughout Iran) and others were members of the Tudeh (Communist) party which used to be banned under the late Shah.

The march appears a bit sparse but considering the risk involved in being in it at all, the turn-out was relatively impressive and continued for some time.
